Audrey Waner

Last year I took a Saori weaving class where I made the building blocks of this piece, planning to embellish it later with brightly colored plastic. I aimed to take a method of weaving known for bold exploration and breaking tradition, and push it over the top into really ostentatious territory.

It took being stuck at home during lockdown to bring this piece to completion. Though it was finished in isolation, it wouldn't have been possible without the contributions of many: local Saori instructor Laura, Honolulu fiber artist Gumi, my uncle in Phoenix who scours estate sales for art supplies, my sister in Chicago who once co-owned many of these Barbie toys, and countless secondhand stores across Arizona and New Mexico.
